After the most punishing war in history, food, clothing, transport and accomodation were still in short supply so these Olympics were characterised by a certain austerity. Australia finished the games with two gold medals, six silver and five bronze. John Winter became the first gold medallist from Western Australia, the only Australian ever to have won the high jump.
